“Police arrived while they were still trying to gain entry and they ran from the area, police pursued the offenders, two got away but one was detained in Mumford Street, he’s still in police custody and has been charged,” Acting Inspector Nigel Turney said. 

It’s understood police were tipped off by a local resident.

“The community really needs to be aware we can’t be everywhere at once and they’re a big part of resolving the issues,” Inspector Turney said. 

Meanwhile, more details have emerged regarding the discovery of a 17-year-old suspect hiding in a Tolland roof. 

Police say the teen was seen jumping out of the window of a nearby home at around 7.15am. 

A 27-year-old woman and a child were at home at the time. 

A wallet was stolen and hasn’t been recovered. 

“It’s probably a terrifying situation for any resident to have somebody in your home whilst you’re in bed in particular, and to get up and find that your house has been broken into,” Inspector Turney said. 

The teenager has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

At 11.30am he had not yet been charged

“Residents should always make sure they’ve got their doors locked if they’re inside,” Inspector Turney said.

“It would be nice to be able to leave your doors and windows open but we live in a society where that’s not the case these days.” 

EARLIER: Two men are in custody after a break-in to a home and an attempted break-in at a Wagga hotel in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police were led on a foot pursuit through Ashmont around 5am, eventually catching up with a 20-year-old man.

They allege he was part of a group who earlier tried to break into the Ashmont Inn.

He was arrested and police are continuing inquiries to identify two more men who also tried to illegally enter the hotel.

In other police news, a teenager was also arrested after a break-in to a Tolland home around 7.15am.

Police say the teen broke into the Dennis Crescent home while residents were there.

He was located in the roof of a nearby house a short time later and taken to Wagga police station.
