‘Crazy’ storm hits Cootamundra, floods streets, closes stores

Cootamundra residents and businesses are counting the cost of a storm which blew through town around 3.15pm on Tuesday.

The storm left a number of businesses in Parker Street including IGA Supermarket and Target Country closed due to flooding and water entering the building.

Small businesses were also affected with Jak and Jill closing after rain entered the roof.

At around 3.30pm, the Muttama Creek crossing at Hovell Street was in flood measuring around half-a-metre of water.

Maddi Cooper from Helen’s Cafe and Coffee Lounge described the storm as “crazy”.

“I’ve never seen that amount of rain in that a period of time,” Miss Cooper said.

As well as putting some buckets around to catch leaks, several cafe staff were chasing down umbrellas which had been caught by the wind.

“I have never seen [water] come up on the footpath before,” she said.

“It was intense, with the thunder and the wind blowing the way it was.

“We were all out on the street watching the deluge.”

Patrons in the Central Hotel on Tuesday afternoon were shocked by how high the water crept up onto the footpath.

“I’ve never seen it come up on the footpath like that before,” Trevor Kearney said.

Ron Loiterton Real Estate Agents’ Daryl Sedgwick said he had been watching the radar before the storm hit.

“In my 45 years in this office, it’s as good a storm as I’ve ever seen,” Mr Sedgwick said.

Mr Sedgwick said the rain had come up to the floor on cars in the street.

“Cootamundra has a very resolute business community, I would expect most businesses to be up and operating very quickly,” he said.

Cootamundra’s State Emergency Services (SES) unit has received around 20 calls for assistance at 5pm on Tuesday.

The Olympic Hotel declared the storm had won for the day at 4.30pm, closing the doors to deal with the aftermath of the pub becoming “a little waterlogged”.
