It is unclear whether Wagga will benefit from a $20 million pledge from the NSW government to advance acute mental health units.

It follows the release of an independent Review of seclusion, restraint and observation of consumers with a mental illness in NSW Health facilities by the state’s chief psychiatrist, Dr Murray Wright, and a panel of five mental health experts, on December 18, 2017.

Wagga’s updated facilities have already been described as “a massive improvement” by Dr Wright and a plan is expected by March.

However, a spokesperson from Murrumbidgee Local Health District could not confirm whether Wagga’s mental health facilities would be guaranteed funding, stating, “MLHD will continue to engage with the Ministry of Health to put in place a local implementation plan for our facilities and the Mental Health Service”.
