Today the gardens are awash with colour, lush green lawns, large trees and a variety of specialised gardens.
To help celebrate the milestone and mark 50 years of the Botanic Gardens the Museum of the Riverina has embraced an app to create the Botanic gardens Adventure Tour.
A free app-based adventure tour will guide visitors around the Botanic Gardens to discover hidden treasures, rare plants and surprising facts about the site.
“It's new and fun way to explore the gardens,” museum education and public programs officer Tim Kurylowicz said.
“You'll roam through some of the less-visited parts of the gardens, solving mysteries and earning points along the way.
“This tour is suitable for children and adults, and takes around 60 minutes to complete. If you don't finish it all today, don't worry - you can return at a later date to pick up the tour where it left off.”
The first location of the tour is Rainforest Gully, located nearby the café and both of the playgrounds. The first challenge is to locate the ancient Wollemi pine which resides somewhere within that gully. As participants complete challenges, new locations are unlocked and the tour progresses.
“During the January School Holidays, there’s a special treat awaiting every person who completes the adventure tour,” Mr Kurylowicz said.
“Want to know more? You’ll need to go on the tour to find out.”
