Several Nationals, Including Mr McCormack, put their hands up for the job on Thursday morning, but Victorian senator Bridget McKenzie was elected deputy leader of the party.
Nationals’ leader Barnaby Joyce refused to say which of his MPs would be booted out of cabinet to make way for Senator McKenzie’s new role.
The vote came just hours before parliament’s final sitting day of the year, where the same-sex marriage amendments occupied much of the agenda.
Earlier in the week, Mr McCormack went on the attack against Labor candidate for Bennelong and former NSW Premier Kristina Keneally, calling her and Senator Sam Dastyari “double faulters”. He said the people of Bennelong needed an “ace” like John Alexander, who recently left parliament amid the citizenship fiasco.
