Current Mayor Greg Conkey, a former editor of The Leader, reflected on the newspaper’s beginnings as he officially opened its new office at 19-31 Peter Street, Wagga.
The Daily Advertiser was located in Trail Street for more than a century.
Cr Conkey said the population of Wagga was just 1500 and beer was five cents a pint, the same price as an edition of The Daily Advertiser in 1868.
But even in those early days, Cr Conkey said, “The Daily Advertiser was never one to mince words”.
That first edition included the comment that “a dirtier town for its size does not exist”.
Director of Australia Community Media John Angilley who also joined The DA’s staff and guests for the opening said members of the Wagga team “have been real pioneers within our company”.
“They were among the first to take on new ways of working, both in sales and editorial,” Mr Angilley said.
