The bitch took 21 starts to break her maiden status but didn’t have to wait as long for her next win.
In fact she backed up her first win at Cowra with another at Young.
McDonald thought she would never break her maiden status, let alone win two races, after a number of near misses.
“She’d run a few seconds and thirds, she is no world beater but she is consistent,” McDonald said.
“I didn’t think she was ever going to win one when she kept running seconds and thirds – I thought she was going to be a professional bridesmaid.”
However he doesn’t go into the Labrokes Monthly Medal (525m) on Friday overly confident.
“This will be her hardest test,” McDonald said.
“She has always been consistent and must have got that one win and found that she liked it.”
One thing on her side is the longer distance.
While she’s never covered it at Wagga her Young win was over a similiar distance.
“It will suit her and it is probably why she has been running seconds and thirds as they have only been over 300s and 400s,” McDonald said. “She got lucky and won a short race but the further she goes the better I think.”
McDonald also has a strong hand in the Caltex On Fernleigh Stakes (400m) with last start winner Dana Piper and Dana Mezza, coming off a second.
He is also hoping Dana Ali can get a run after being named as an emergency.
