The Bushpigs led by 14 points at the first break and then kept the visitors goal-less for two quarters, while piling on nine goals themselves.
And the 68-point margin was built on in the last quarter as CSU claimed their sixth win of the season in style, 17.14 (116) to 3.8 (26).
“Very pleased,” Athanitis said.
“For this footy club to win six games, with what we spend on players and things like that – six wins is a huge effort.
“I think the club’s certainly going in the right direction.”
Jordan Ackland, Tennyson Vance and Rob Herzfeld were among a host of strong performers for CSU.
“We were able to keep powering through, which was good,” Athanitis said.
“They were very keen to get a win today. Our wins have been pretty scrappy and hard work so to get a win where we could enjoy ourselves a bit was great – a good reward for the boys.”
Tom Morton kicked all three of Coleambally’s goals while Graham O’Connell was again the pick of the Blues. He’s been among their best in all but one of his 11 games this year.
