Two school canteen volunteers Amy Baulch and Trish Orban took on the challenge of providing a healthy, tasty menu to meet the new benchmark.
The revised strategy is led by the Department of Education in partnership with Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) and Healthy Kids Association NSW. It should be in all public schools by the end of 2019.
Each menu is required to have at least 75 per cent of ‘every day’ foods and drinks and no more than 25 per cent ‘occasional’ items with at least a 3.5 health star rating.
“Despite some initial hurdles, the change has been a positive one,” said Mrs Baulch.
