The idea to acknowledge Holbrook’s former name through the Ten Mile Creek Bridge was presented at the May meeting, but councillors resolved a policy must first be developed, as there was none.
The draft policy recommended to council for adoption states bridges would not be named without input from relevant historical societies, local aboriginal land councils and community groups and any name should be “unique to the area”.
Laurel Willis said she and husband Roy believed it would be fitting to name the bridge after Germanton upon completion, as it connects to a heritage precinct.
“The community voted years ago to change the name of the town … we’re wanting to rekindle that story from the past because it’s been forgotten,” she said.
Eighty-seven per cent of voters, or 54 people, agreed with the couple in a poll on The Border Mail website and eight people voted it should not be given the name Germanton Bridge.
