Reveille at 4.30, Breakfast 5, move off 6.30 a.m. At 5 a.m. the Q.M. wanted me to go with him and take over the A.D.S. so had to put my stuff on the car and go without breakfast. Arrived there, but they were not having any until later so had to wait until later in the morning. The A.D.S. situated in Happy Valley at F……. and we had another one thousand yards away an A.A.D.S. in a valley alongside Heilly where our C.C.S.’s used to be in bygone days.
Ran up to the A.A.D.S. with the Colonel in the Chat to see what they had as a guide for me to know what was required as my section was supplying the whole show with equipment. B. and C. Sections’ gear remaining on the waggons in case of a hurried move. I took over the station at 11. a.m. with B’s and A’s personnel, most of the bearers going forward to the posts. During the day we do everything in tents which are dug in a little, and at night we repair to a fine dugout designed to hold 42 stretcher cases with a trolley arrangement for bringing them up and down.’Tis one of the best I have met and will be used exclusively in case of heavy shelling.
We are all in dugouts, my own being a splendid one being lined with curtains taken from the village and it also has leadlight windows from the same source, so that conditions allowing we will be very comfortable. Heavy guns are fairly thick in the neighbourhood, but the front is very quiet.
