Wagga High students are donating five cent coins to form their own silver heart alongside a Canberra cancer fundraiser.
Inspired by Connie Johnson, a breast cancer sufferer who collected coins for a world-record breaking heart, the students will lay down their coins on June 14.
An ordinary netball court in the middle of Canberra was transformed for an extraordinary cause last Wednesday, as thousands of people donated millions of five-cent coins to raise money for Connie Johnson’s Love Your Sister charity.
Together with her gold Logie winning brother Samuel Johnson, the pair have worked tirelessly raising funds for breast cancer after she was tragically diagnosed with the disease almost seven years ago.
Believing her end was near, Ms Johnson made the brave decision to stop treatment, switching her focus to one last fundraising effort.
Now, Wagga High School has rallied behind the cause, working to form a glimmering heart of their own.
Year 12 student Sophie Thomson said she was proud to be part of such a worthwhile cause.
“There’s so many campaigns out there but not enough research, breast cancer takes so many lives,” Miss Thomson said.
Miss Thomson said the heart display was a unique way to raise funds.
“It’s so much better than just giving money and not knowing seeing where it’s going,” Miss Thomson said.
“You get the reward of physically seeing the donations.”
Learning support officer Janelle Lamotte said the fundraiser was also about raising awareness.
“It seemed like a nice thing to do given how many people in our school community would’ve been affected by cancer,” Ms Lamotte said.
“The Johnson’s journey has really connected with the students.”
The Year 11 and 12 students will compete to see who can raise the most.
