Bill Stevenson and his wife Kathlene were married for 64 years before she died on February 27.
Tuesday would have been Mrs Stevenson’s 84th birthday and the boys wanted to send a present to her in heaven.
Mr Stevenson visited his wife in a nursing home twice a day for five years, often accompanied by his young neighbours, Harry Mills, 10, and brother Fletcher, seven.
“They’ve been coming to my place since they were two weeks old,” he said.
Mr Stevenson was sitting on his verandah on Tuesday when the boys came across and said they wanted to send a present to Mrs Stevenson in heaven.
They let go of balloons and Harry said they must have reached Mrs Stevenson because he could not see them anymore.
“I never had the heart to tell him I had that many tears in my eyes, I couldn’t see mine either,” Mr Stevenson said.
“It turned a sad day into a brilliant day.
“If I’m still alive next year, I hope they come back.”
