A quantity of asbestos material was found by contractors working on behalf of council within the building rubble at Forest Hill Oval, on the corner of Elizabeth and Dunn avenues.
The find came during excavation works as part of an upgrade at the park.
Work at the site ceased immediately on discovery of the material.
A licensed asbestos removal contractor has been engaged by council to make the site safe prior to the removal and disposal of the material.
The removal works will determine the extent of the contamination and the time it will take to remediate the site.
Wagga City Council is now in the process of trying to determine a possible source of the asbestos-related contamination.
