A Star Witness colt out of the Trevor Sutherland-trained mare My Dear Friend exceeded all expectations on day two of the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.
After racing the mare with Sutherland, the majority of owners decided to stay in My Dear Friend to breed from her.
That decision paid dividends as Hong Kong-based Little Kwok Hing Hung and Hawkes Racing paid $310,000 for her first offspring on Thursday.
The colt will be trained by Team Hawkes.
Sutherland picked the mare out of a tried horse sale for just $18,000. She went on to win nine races and now deliver a $310,000 colt.
“We can’t believe it, to be honest,” Wagga part-owner Tim Rowe said from the sale.
“It’s pretty bloody exciting.”
My Dear Friend, by General Nediym, won $120,000 in her career, which included a city win in Adelaide before joining Sutherland.
Rowe praised Sutherland, who remains in the ownership, for his efforts.
“It’s a credit to Trev,” he siad.
“We paid $18,000 at a tried horse sale then won first up with her four weeks later.
“She ended up winning nine races for us. We ended up having money left over at the end and thought we may as well breed from her.”
The group of about 20 owners were stoked just to have a colt accepted into the Magic Millions sale so the $310,000 purchase price exceeded all expectations.
