It was a happening time for the city – here’s what was making news in the pages of The Daily Advertiser.
Major players in the design and construction of Wagga’s planned aquatic centre have been told to stick to the budget limit of $10 million. Council is under intense pressure to keep within budget for the aquatic centre following embarrassing and costly over runs in some major projects over the past two years, including the Civic Centre,
About 80 hydroponically grown cannabis plants with a street value of $184,000 were seized in a raid on a Wagga residence. A 19-year-old man has been charged with possession of a large quantity of a controlled substance.
Cattle sold at the Wagga Livestock Marketing Centre passed the $2-a-kilogram mark on Monday. LMC manager Kevin Watts said a pen of heifer vealers fetched a high of 209.2 cents a kilogram, while a pen of steer vealers reached 207.2 cents a kilogram.
The South Wagga National Bank branch has reversed its decision not to sell Lions Club Christmas cakes as the products went on sale yesterday.
Wagga City Council is poised to get tough with the owner of a once-proud historic building which is now a tumble-down eyesore. Metre-high grass and weeds are the latest apparent afflictions of “Belmore”, located on the corner of Trail and Kincaid Streets. Council’s environmental services committee has supported an officer’s recommendation that legal action be taken to force the owner to make repairs.
Wagga’s rapidly-decaying road network is forcing the city council to divert about $500,000 from planned resealing projects to emergency repairs.
Teenager Damien Rex has pitched in with a golfing triumph which has given the city’s sporting profile another significant lift. In a performance of Tiger Woods stature, Rex blitzed a crack field of golfers, some more than double his age, to capture a national Pitch n Putt title in Victoria.
Wagga residents are being asked to pay for their own street lighting in a bid to maintain public safety and security while Wagga City Council struggles to find adequate funds to complete a lighting upgrade. Council’s community services department is asking householders to leave their outdoor lights burning all night and pay the associated electricity costs to improve lighting in the streets. The initiative has been dubbed the “porch lights on” campaign.
Love looking back?
