Wagga’s claim to be the home of the Chiko Roll is now being challenged by Nationals federal MP Andrew Gee, who used his maiden speech to parliament this week to pounce on the fact the deep-fried delight has been manufactured at Bathurst in his electorate since 1995.
And Labor MP Lisa Chesters is not giving ground on Bendigo’s claim on the Chiko Roll, saying it was invented by a Bendigo man and some packaging carries the wording “born in Bendigo”.
The Chiko Roll was “launched” at the 1951 Wagga Show.
Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack, said he was prepared to go into a Chiko Roll “eat off” with Mr Gee and Ms Chesters to decide the issue once and for all.
The idea is whoever among the three who can scoff down a Chiko Roll the fastest can claim the title of home of the Chiko Roll.
“I can eat pretty fast if I have to; as a politician you always have to eat on the run and you have to woof it down,” Mr McCormack said.
“I remember doing pretty well at a SAO eating competition when I was at St Michael’s Regional High School.”
