Painted faces for NAIDOC Week as new Wagga playgroup opens

Children got into the spirit of NAIDOC Week at the Tolland Community Centre as a new playgroup  – Yalbilinya, Girinya, Buwanha, which is Wiradjuri for learn, play, grow – opened its doors on Monday.

The day included boomerang art, weaving, music and facepainting.

Playgroup NSW manager programs and quality Karen van Woudenberg said there was a great turnout.

“It was a lovely atmosphere,” Ms van Woudenberg said.

“It’s so nice to have something just for the kids.”

Yalbilinya, Girinya, Buwanha is a program run by Playgroup NSW with Indigenous children aged 0-6 years and their families.

The playgroup has five sessions – Monday from 1pm to 2.30pm at the Ngurra Hub, Ashmont; Wednesday from 9.30am to 11.30am at Ashmont Public School; two sessions on Thursday - 10am to noon at Kooringal Community Hub, and 12.30pm to 2.30pm at Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site; on Friday from 10am to noon at Tolland Community Hub.
