The Turvey Park Brigade attended to more than one house fire every week in winter last year.
Station commander Chad Kennis said it was always a busy time of the year.
“As we know, firefighters dread winter because there is always a spike in the number of home fires,” Mr Kennis said, adding residents should install working smoke alarms.
He said people mistakenly think that house fires cannot happen to them.
Last winter
- 21 house fires
- 4 Persons were injured as a result of these fires
- 3 of these fires were caused by faulty electrical equipment
- 2 of these fires were caused by inadequately supervised fires
- Only 8 of these had working smoke alarms at the time the fires occurred
