I HAVE written about this before a while back, and then they went under the radar for a while, but unfortunately it is back, and when I say it, I mean the massive fishing trawler the Geelong Star.

Now you may think the government, both past and present, banned these super trawlers coming into Australian waters and decimating the bait fish along our coasts ... well they did.
They banned trawlers 130 metres and over, but that’s easy to get around, get a smaller boat in length but bigger capacity in holding room.
The Geelong Star is only 95 metres, just a bit longer than your average tinny, but can hold over 16,500 tonne of fish on the vessel itself.
There were a couple of noted or recognised fishermen – Lee Raynor and Al McGlashan – and a lot of Joe Blow fishermen who went to parliament to protest the “availability” of Australian fishing grounds allowed to be decimated by this vessel.
The government said something along the lines of “we will not let them fish in sensitive regions and we will fine them heavily if the hurt or damage dolphins or seals or birds” all the while giving the Dutch owners a wink.
The Geelong Star is then taken away for a few weeks, probably to some other fishing grounds, to let things die down a bit and then back they come.
They were seen just off the coast of Bermi a couple of weeks ago and the all of a sudden there was no bait to be found – funny that – NOT.
There is a lot of things put on social media regarding this, but social media doesn’t go anywhere.
Yes, it does allow you to vent, but the government doesn’t really align itself with social media and can just switch it off and say no one has contacted us.
Here are a few email addresses that you can send an email to protest: assistant.minister@maff.gov.au, minister@maff.gov.au, Greg.Hunt.MP@environment.gov.au, Darren.Chester.MP@aph.gov.au, ann.sudmalis.mp@aph.gov.au, richard.marles.mp@aph.gov.a, tanya.plibersek.mp@aph.gov.au, andrew.leigh.mp@aph.gov.au and Gai.Brodtmann.MP@aph.gov.au.
I have sent an email regarding this, and if you care about our fishery, so should you. Even if you are just a fresh water fisherman or fisherwoman, an email will take the same amount of time as what it does to write something on social media. And who knows, if enough of us do it things may change.
Fishing around
Burrinjuck: Has been a few fish caught with the big fellas been caught mainly at night trolling BIG lures, the yellas have been skulking deep among the structure and the reddies are back with big numbers being reported mainly on plastics. Large numbers of trout and cod finglings released all over the dam this week so hopefully in the future we may pick up a couple.
Blowering: A few fish reported with a couple just below the magic mark and a few fair to good sizes. Most fishermen are travelling that extra 20 minutes and heading to the Juck – more shade and structure.
Talbingo: Couple of reports of reddies but not much else.
Tantangara: No reports.
Eucumbene: Good numbers of both trout on the troll in most parts of the lake, fly fishing is still ok, early mornings and late afternoon have produced the best numbers.
Jindabyne: Some good numbers from the top end of the dam, bit slow at the bottom end, tassies have been the preferred lures, fly fishing has tapered (fishing pun there) off.
Hume Weir: Some nice cod being caught, haven’t heard of any of the magic mark, a couple of yellas and as per the Juck, the reddies are making their presence known.
Mulwala: Some good numbers of cod, mainly trolled up in the channels, some reports of nice fish on surface lures in the evenings, haven’t heard of too many yellas.
The river: Not a hell of a lot of fish reported a few smaller ones, with the river being pretty high at the moment the fishing is a little slow but the water is cool.
Lake Albert: Still good numbers of cod and yellas mainly on bait from the bank, great fun for the kids of any age.
South Coast: As per the main story, not many bait fish around but the has been a couple of Marlin landed, kingies still around the island and snapper towards Bermi. Some nice bream in the estuaries, always good fun on light line.
