FARMERS in Griffith, Hay, Narrandera, Leeton and in Greater Hume Shire have been ordered to cease harvest.
Carrathool, Murrumbidgee, Corowa and Berrigan shires are also included in the order.
Rural Fire Service (RFS) Southern Border Team’s Superintendent Patrick Westwood said the notice was in effect for the rest of Sunday, December 20 because of the severe fire danger.
A total fire ban is already in place across the Riverina and Southern Slopes.
“We expect fires to run very hard today, we cannot afford any accidental ignitions from harvesting machinery and agricultural activities today” Superintendent Westwood said.
“This includes the use of motorised, cutting, grinding and welding equipment in all open areas.”
Under severe and very high fire conditions, the RFS advises:
- Well prepared homes that are actively defended can provide safety during a fire
- Follow your Bush Fire Survival Plan and remain vigilant
- NSW RFS may request that harvesting operations and other machinery use stop in grassland, paddocks and on roadsides
- Keep informed by listening to local radio, watching television news broadcasts and monitoring www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.
During a total fire ban, no fires may be lit in the open and all fire permits are suspended. Gas and electric barbecues may be used, provided certain conditions are met.
