The RFS is reporting the fire has been brought under control. Up to 80 firefighters were on scene to battle the blaze.
3.30pm:
Collingullie Rural Fire Service captain Graham White has told our reporter Brodie Owen at the scene the fire there was met with a significant RFS response, including more than 20 units and two aircraft.
He said no loss of livestock had been reported as yet, while winter crops in the affected area had been harvested.
He said two houses had been threatened and spot fires had been a problem.
3.15pm:
The Collingullie fire is now under control, according to a resident The Daily Advertiser has spoken to at the scene.
He said the fire broke out on the property Hillside during harvesting operations.
Fanned by winds gusting up to 56km/h, the spot fire escalated and threatened property and livestock.
Wagga City Council has announced the following road closures at this time:
12 Mile Road; 13 Mile Road; The Rock Collingullie Road at The Rock; The Rock Collingullie Road at The Collingullie Pub; The Rock Collingullie Road at Uranquinty Cross Roads.
The RFS advises 200 hectares has been burnt and lists the fire’s status as being controlled.
2.15pm
Collingullie property owner Mick Hansell described the fire as “extremely bad”. He said the wind was challenging and smaller fires were breaking out. Farmers in the area were busy moving livestock from the path of the fire. It is believed the fire broke out in a stubble paddock.
2.00pm
AN “out of control” grass fire has broken out near Collingullie, the Rural Fire Service has said.
Residents are being warned they will soon need to evacuate.
Multiple crews are on the ground between Collingullie and The Rock. A light plane is also attempting to bring the fire under control.
The RFS say the fire is spread over more than 20 hectares and is getting bigger.
It is understood wind conditions have now pushed the fire in the direction of The Rock.
Smoke is also being pushed over Wagga.
More to come.
