Have you ever wondered about what Charles Dickens ate or the history of airplane food?
Food historian Richard Foss has made a career of investigating food and drink through the ages.
He is in Wagga today to reveal his latest findings - what Jane Austen drank.
Food and drink are hinted at but Mr Foss uncovers what they really dined on.
Wagga City Library’s temporary programs and promotions officer, Peter Casey, said Drinking With Jane Austen would be the ideal introduction to her novels if you have never experienced them before.
Mr Foss will make a punch she would have drunk from a recipe he uncovered from the time and each person at the lecture will get a glass.
The recipes will use ingredients such as rum, brandy, cloves, cinnamon and orange wine.
Other traditional drinks will be available to purchase and Mr Casey is comprising a small recipe book for guests to take home.
“It’s a really interesting insight,” Mr Casey said.
“These aren’t dusty old people who never existed, these are people just like us.”
Drinking With Jane Austen will be held in the downstairs foyer of the Civic Theatre tomorrow from 6.30pm before drinks on the balcony upstairs.
Limited tickets are available for $30, which includes a drink, supper and lecture, from the Civic Theatre.
