Firefighters responded to the incident shortly before 7.30pm Sunday night.
By the time firefighters arrived, the fire was out but the gas bottle had to be turned off.
Turvey Park station officer Chad Kennis said there appeared to be a build up of gas, which led to the explosion.
The man was taken to hospital and treated for burns to 18 per cent of his body.
Mr Kennis warned it was important to ensure gas bottles were in date and in working order.
He said barbecues must also be cleaned of fat to prevent fires.
“It’s an important one in the lead-up to summer,” he said.
