Grandparents are integral in making family moments that matter.
And when a family is hit by crisis, it can be these same elders that provide the glue to keep things together.
Residents across the region will be using this week to thank their grandparents in the lead-up to Grandparents’ Day on Sunday.
Centacare’s Lyn Reilly said the rise in illicit drug use has placed more pressure on older Australians.
“There are more grandparents raising their grandchildren now, especially with the ice epidemic,” Ms Reilly said.
But grandparents feel like they face the battle alone – a primary reason Grandparents Doing it Tough exists.
“It’s about supporting each other and saying you are not alone,” Ms Reilly said.
The group has received funding to raise the profile of grandparent carers from the Council on the Ageing. The group is creating a community quilt with the theme “Moments That Matter”.
