
The Northern Riverina is subject to a total fire ban today (Friday, October 16) as a perfect storm of high temperatures and windy conditions collide.
The ban commenced at midnight and affects the Carrathool, Griffith, Hay, Leeton, Murrumbidgee and Narrandera local government areas.
The Northern Riverina is the only Rural Fire Service (RFS) zone in the state that has a severe fire danger warning, while the Southern Riverina zone is listed as very high.
Temperatures are expected to reach the low to high 30s across the Riverina, with northerly winds up to 45km/h in during the day, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Under a total fire ban, all fire permits are suspended and no fires may be lit in the open.
Gas and electric barbecues may be used, provided certain rules conditions are followed.
These include:
- It is under the direct control of a responsible adult, who is present at all times while it is operating;
- No combustible material is allowed within two metres at any time it is operating;
- You have an immediate and continuous supply of water; and
- The barbecue is within 20 metres of a permanent private dwelling such as a home; or
- The barbecue is within a designated picnic area and the appliance is approved by Council, National Parks or State Forest.
