Ag College speedster Sophie Welsh is on her way to the national championships following her success at the Australian University Games on the Gold Coast this week.
Welsh has earned green and gold selection after playing a big role in CSU’s women’s sevens win.
Ag College had four representatives in the team that scored an impressive 27-5 win over University of Newcastle in the final.
Welsh played alongside Harriet Elleman, Alice White and Laura Bennett in the tournament.
The team only came together for the first time 30 minutes before the first game but improved as the tournament went on to become the first team to get the better of Newcastle outfit in the game that matters most.
Elleman thought the team’s superior fitness helped the Fruitbats come out on top in the decider.
“It was a bit of a longer game, it became 10-minute halves instead of seven-minutes halves,” Elleman said.
“It was tactics too, as we had already played them, but managed to get around them and turn it on their heads.”
Ag College entered a team in the Eastern University Games in Wagga before joining forces with members from CSU Bathurst’s team.
“We were very happy to come away with a gold medal considering we hadn’t trained together or even met each other before Monday really,” Elleman said.
