Departing St Michael's cricketer Tom Byrnes is one step away from booking his place in the national championships.
Byrnes has been selected to compete at under 19 state challenge teams next weekend, where the NSW Metro and ACT/NSW Country teams will be selected, following a century in the country cup in Dubbo.
Wagga’s Greg McLay will coach the ACT/NSW Country team at the national championships at Adelaide in December and was impressed by his efforts.
“Tom performed well at that carnival,” McLay said.
“He got a century on the middle day and a couple of starts in the other innings, which we would have liked to see him translate into bigger scores, but the fact he got 100 on the middle day certainly helped his cause.
“He batted very well against pretty good opposition.”
Byrnes is looking to make a name for himself in the Sydney grade cricket scene.
