EXPERIENCED bush jockey Nick Souquet believes he will need to ride “at least” one winner on Friday to take out the Southern District Racing Association (SDRA) premiership.
Souquet heads into Friday’s meeting at Murrumbidgee Turf Club (MTC) with a narrow one-win advantage over Simon Miller and John Kissick.
Souquet has five rides on eight-race TAB card at Wagga and is sure that his one-win lead will not be enough to see him home.
“It won’t be, I'll have to ride at least one or two,” Souquet said.
“Them boys have both got really good rides so I think I’ll have to ride one winner at least.”
Souquet believes the Gary Colvin-trained Superoo and Tim Donnelly’s Sky Cruiser has his best two chances of victory.
“My rides aren’t too bad,” he said.
“I really like one of Gary Colvins, Superoo.
“He’s drawn wide in 18 again but that might not be the worst thing.
“Tim Donnelly’s horse will be hard to beat too, back to the 1000 metres.”
Souquet, on his count, has won six SDRA jockey’s premierships and last won the title two seasons ago.
He would love to add another to his collection.
“I’m keen as ever,” Souquet said.
“It just means you have had a fair season, that’s all.
“You don’t want to worry about (premierships) too much but you would rather win them than lose them.”
Souquet, 40, revealed this may be one of his last chances to claim the SDRA premiership.
“I’ll probably only ride for three or four more years,” he said.
“It just depends on how I’m enjoying it, and more importantly, how my body holds up.”
Looking at the chasers, Kissick has a book of seven rides at Wagga.
He has picked up the ride on last-start Wagga winner Mutual Trust in the Riverina Cup (3800m).
Miller has six rides with in-form mudlark Eklands the pick of the bunch.
Interestingly enough, Souquet has rides for both Chris Heywood and Trevor Sutherland as they battle it out for the trainer’s premiership.
Nick Heywood has a full book of eight rides as he chases back-to-back SDRA apprentice jockey titles.
Suspended Wagga apprentice Jason Collins leads Heywood by one.
