CHARLES Sturt University has taken out the coveted spirit of the games award at the 2015 Eastern University Games.
While Newcastle University, one of 22 visiting tertiary institutions, was out to defend its championship, Sydney’s University of Technology dominated the gold medal tally to take out the overall champion trophy.
The four-day competition that drew almost 3000 students came to a close at Bolton Park Stadium late Thursday night.
The University of Sydney (Cumberland Campus) claimed the per capita trophy, but it was hosts, CSU, who impressed organisers with their commitment and team spirit.
CSU capped off the competition with several wins across the 16 contested sports.
The games are one of three regional events held simultaneously across Australia, with a range of sports serving as the qualifying competition for the Australian University Games.
Eastern University Games project manager, Tamara King, was pleased with the outcome of this year’s event.
“All of the student athletes played well and it’s definitely great to see a competitive edge partnered with sportsmanship across the teams,” she said. “We look forward to seeing a similar standard of sporting excellence at the upcoming Australian University Games on the Gold Coast this September.”
Member for Wagga Daryl Maguire said it was fantastic to see thousands of university students from across NSW and the ACT enjoying outstanding sporting competition and great facilities, while also familiarising themselves with the many experiences on offer in Wagga.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres was proud to have secured the event for regional NSW, helping drive visitation to regional cities like Wagga.
“I congratulate the University of Technology, Sydney on their deserved win at this year’s Eastern University Games,” Mr Ayres said.
The games were supported by Wagga native and former Olympian and Matilda, Sally Shipard, as the event patron.
