A DREARY day in Canberra brought on a scrappy game of Aussie Rules, as the Riverina Lions defeated Australian National University 9.16 (70) to 1.0 (6) on Saturday.
The slippery conditions led to inaccuracy in front of goal according to Lions coach Dan Lloyd.
“The ball was like a cake of soap, marks weren’t getting held,” Lloyd said.
“We were having a lot of contested shots because we weren’t getting those good easy marks.”
The local women had the lion’s share of possession and Lloyd anticipated a more comprehensive victory over a team that has had two wins from seven games. The Lions will work on goal kicks at training.
Strong defence from the Lions kept ANU scoreless until the fourth quarter. Alison Naismith was “unstoppable” as half-back flank.
Goals: Danielle Peel 4, Lauren Lennox 3, Ellie Dalgarno-Fixter 1, Kahli Abbott 1.
