WAGGA trainer Chris Heywood refuses to lie down in the fight for the Southern District Racing Association (SDRA) premiership.
Heywood enjoyed success at Corowa on Saturday as Asunder ($7.00) finally enjoyed some luck this preparation to claim the Cofield Wines Benchmark 50 Handicap (1600m).
The victory, which followed a winner at Albury last Thursday, moves Heywood back within one win of Sutherland in the SDRA trainer’s premiership.
Sutherland, who did not take any horses to Corowa, leads with 23 wins, one ahead of Heywood on 22.
Albury trainer Brett Cavanough also enjoyed a winner at Corowa to keep in touch with 19.5 wins in the SDRA for the season.
Cavanough and RIchard Bensley combined for success with Spinifex Gypsy ($2.70) in the Pfeiffer Wines Maiden Plate (1300m).
Brad Clark was the successful jockey on Asunder.
The jockey’s premiership remained unchanged with both Simon Miller and Nick Souquet going winless at Corowa.
Miller holds a two-win lead over Souquet and John Kissick.
Attention will now turn to Wagga’s race meeting on Tuesday.
Murrumbidgee Turf Club will host a seven-race TAB card where Sutherland has seven horses engaged.
Heywood has four plus two emergencies, while Cavanough is not bringing any horses across to the meeting.
