EAST Wagga-Kooringal have been enlisted as odds on favourites to win a drought-breaking Farrer League premiership.
Australian betting giant Sportsbet broke new ground on Tuesday with the release of the first ever official market for the Farrer League.
Sportsbet opened up the undefeated Hawks as $1.70 favourite to claim the Farrer League flag.
Second-placed The Rock-Yerong Creek is on the second line of betting at $2.70 with a gap to Coleambally next at $7.50.
Three-time Farrer League reigning premier Temora is rated an $8.00 chance of a fourth consecutive flag.
Sportsbet’s Joseph Galati stopped short of labelling the Hawks unbeatable as they look to break a 33-year first grade premiership drought.
“Not unbeatable, but the odds suggest they are the team to beat,” Galati said.
“Both East Wagga-Kooringal and The Rock must be respected.
“They look to be the two form teams in the Farrer League.
“We believe other chances exist, but we are holding these two teams safe.”
EWK coach Gavin McMahon laughed off the Hawks’ short price quote.
"I would just say that the market by Sportsbet is more of an entertainment piece and does not have a great deal of relevance to what’s going on," McMahon said.
The Hawks have won their opening six games by an average of 50 points.
TRYC got the closest in round six when going down by just 17 points.
Sportsbet hopes the unique market creates plenty of interest for Farrer League supporters.
”We are trying to build and expand our market offerings to engage with the wider community,” Galati said.
“We want to be innovative with our product offers and the first to offer markets to the public.
“We are hopeful it will attract the punters and generate a new found interest and talking point among the local supporters.”
Sportsbet is also looking into opening a market for the Riverina League, which is enjoying one of their closest competitions in 20 years.
