COOLAMON’S St Michael’s Primary School is through to its first Riverina final of the Paul Kelly Cup after a strong performance in yesterday’s competition at Jubilee Park.
St Michael’s Coolamon will take on South Wagga Public in next month’s Riverina final of the Paul Kelly Cup under lights at Robertson Oval after winning their way through yesterday.
More than 450 boys and girls converged on Jubilee Park for yesterday’s gala day where a record number of teams took part in the primary school competition.
Wagga Public School came up trumps in the girls’ competition with an impressive victory over Lake Albert Public School, 2.6 (18) to 1.1 (7).
Southern NSW AFL development manager Marc Geppert said it was great to see so many kids playing the sport.
“We had a record number of teams, which is really good,” Geppert said.
“It was fantastic to see the girls side of things getting bigger and bigger.
“They don’t get the opportunity to play much so it’s good to see that when they do, they’re getting out there and having a go.”
St Michael’s Coolamon qualified through to the final with a three-point victory over Henschke Primary School in the semi-final.
South Wagga secured its place with a comfortable win over Sacred Heart Primary.
