The Cootamundra teenager has parted ways with the club that nurtured him for three years in search of a fresh start to revive his NRL career.
At home on his family farm in Cootamundra yesterday, the burly 19-year-old admitted the Storm offer had given him a new lease on life as he looks towards the exciting challenge.
"I was at the Raiders for about three years and towards the end there I felt like I was dragging it out a bit," he said. "They've sent through the contract now and I'm about to sign it in the next few days.
"It'll be good for me to get a fresh new start.
"The contract with Storm is only for a year but hopefully if I have a good enough year I'll be able to get an NRL contract with them.
"I know a couple of boys down there who used to play at the Raiders a few years ago so I'll know a couple of people but other than that it's a fresh start."
Berkrey has been with the Raiders since he was plucked from the Cootamundra Bulldogs at the age of 16.
Since then, the bustling back-rower has been in top form in the Toyota Cup, despite missing 10 weeks of last season with a serious knee injury.
Now fully fit and ready for a new adventure, Berkrey admits he cannot wait to start his new life in Melbourne.
"Yeah the knee is great, everything, my whole body is good at the moment," he said.
"I really can't wait to get into it."
Full of support and pride for his son, Wayne Berkrey admitted he was thrilled for Luke to take up the fantastic opportunity.
Working alongside Luke on the farm yesterday, Wayne was adamant relocating to Melbourne could be the best thing to happen to his son's career.
"Canberra has been really good to him but it's time for a change,"?he said. "I think it'll be a bit of a wake up call without being too harsh.
"The only problem is that Canberra was an hour-and-a-half away but Melbourne is a bit more of a trip.
"We've got him back at home for the next few weeks in the meantime, it's been really good to have him around."
Berkrey is expected to start pre-season training next month.
