Wagga was mopping up yesterday and assessing the damage after the torrential rain fell across the region on Sunday.A number of businesses remained closed in Wagga yesterday due to water damage or flooding, including Mitre 10 and Flex It gym.Ladysmith Public School was closed as a precaution, with residents unable to be certain how high the floodwaters would rise.Ashmont Preschool also sent children home after one room and the staff room flooded. The wet weather also caused disruptions for Wagga Local Court yesterday. The court office suffered some water damage, while some solicitors were unable to even get to Wagga for yesterday's sittings.Wagga City Council crews were still assessing the extent of flood damage yesterday, with Old Narrandera Road still closed.Water remained over Keajura Road, between Ladysmith and the Hume Highway, where a major box culvert burst. Wagga mayor Kerry Pascoe said the rainfall had forced council to close all its sporting grounds for 24 hours."The grounds are obviously very waterlogged from the rain and we need to preserve the grounds to keep them in prime condition for future use," he said.Councillor Pascoe said using the grounds in their current condition could prevent them from being usable in the coming weeks."By closing the grounds for a brief period, we can give them time to dry out properly without causing any damage to the surfaces," he said.
