NSW Rural Fire Service spokesman Greg Allan said a crew was called to a shed in the town south of Wagga about 4.30am on Saturday.
Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Luke Unsworth said FRNSW crews were called in to support the RFS.
"When firefighters arrived on the scene the RFS had already extinguished the fire, however the vehicle was leaking diesel fuel," he said.
"Firefighters worked to decant the diesel fuel from the prime mover and also to collect the diesel fuel and water that had collected in the gutter."
He said a hazardous materials (hazmat) unit attended and in total collected 500 litres of diesel and water for the site.
He said the truck wasn't carrying diesel and that it was the fuel tank that had leaked, but that he wasn't sure what had sparked the fire.
FRNSW Riverina Zone Commander Superintendent Stewart Alexander said firefighters cleared as much of the spilled materials as possible.
Police were called to the scene but they have not launched an investigation, though the cause remains unknown.
