A TUMUT man sentenced to jail for robbery spree in the township in September dreams of becoming a youth worker once he gets his drug addiction under control, a court has heard.Bevan John Argent, 42, appeared at Wagga Local Court yesterday where he was sentenced to 18 months jail with a non-parole period of six months.Argent had pleaded guilty to breaking into the Tumut Shire Council office, Jaycees Footwear, Peter L Brown and Associates and Katopra Design and Printing between September 15 and 16 last year.He stole 13 laptop computers, digital cameras and cash worth thousands of dollars and left the business owners with huge damage bills for smashed windows and doors.Argent's solicitor, Jim Allen, said at the time of the offences, his client had just changed his medication for depression which "affected his general health and mood"."The property was returned to the victims. His criminal conduct was not sophisticated and no one was hurt ... he is passionate about a career, about further study. He wants to become a youth worker," Mr Allen told magistrate Anthony Murray.Mr Allen said Argent had made contact with a drug rehabilitation program known as Peppers each week since his arrest to check on the availability of beds.Mr Murray noted that at the time of the robberies, Argent had been released on parole only three months earlier for similar offences."You're going on a roundabout of committing offences, going into custody, coming out on parole and committing more offences," said Mr Murray.He sentenced Argent to an 18-month jail term with a six-month non-parole period.With time already served, Argent will become eligible for parole in March.
