VETERAN Turvey Park midfielder Blair Campbell last night upstaged a host of more-fancied opponents to take out the Riverina Football League’s highest individual honour – the Jim Quinn Medal. The 33-year-old Bulldogs skipper was crowned the RFL’s best and fairest player for season 2008 at a presentation evening at the Narrandera Ex-Serviceman’s Club.Campbell, a premiership player and former coach of the Bulldogs who has been one of the RFL’s most consistent players this decade, was a popular and deserved winner of the award last night.Campbell sat just off the pace for most of last night’s count but finished strongly to win by a vote, in front of Griffith star Mick Duncan, who was ineligible due to a suspension in the second-last round. In a tight count, Campbell was judged best on ground six times for the season and collected nine votes in between rounds 14 to 17 to come home with a wet sail and poll 23 votes. Campbell beat Duncan (22), with last year’s winner Luke Maloney coming in third on 19.The surprise of the night came in the form of Eastern Hawks ruckman Andrew Craig, who despite his team only winning two games for the year, polled 18 votes and led the count until round 15.Campbell’s Turvey Park team mate Andrew Donaldson started the night as one of the favourites and while outdone by his captain, still polled 16 votes to finish in fifth place.Mangoplah-Cookardinia United-Eastlakes assistant coach Jared Kahlefeldt finished with 15, while Daniel Rankin and Peter Heath rounded out top vote-getters on 14.
