A MAN has died after a car struck a tree four kilometres east of Collingullie last night.Paramedics said the car was travelling along the Sturt Highway shortly after 6pm yesterday when it left the road and hit a tree before coming to rest on its roof.Emergency services, including the Volunteer Rescue Association and Rural Fire Service (RFS) units from Yarragundry and Collingullie, attended the scene to find the vehicle alight and the occupant trapped inside. While rescue crews worked at releasing the victim, RFS crews provided fire protection for rescuers. The deceased man was removed from the vehicle shortly before 10pm.Police closed a section of the Sturt Highway between Collingullie and the intersection of the Olympic Highway, diverting traffic along the Olympic Highway and north from Collingullie onto Old Narrandera Road. The highway remained closed late into the night as officers from the Forensic Science Group carried out investigations. Speed was believed to be a factor in the accident.Members of the victims’ family were allowed to enter the exclusion zone shortly after 7pm.
