In a mid-year rugby league shock, Field yesterday anointed Wooden as his long-term successor at the Wagga club.The most decorated prop in bush football, rampaging Wooden, 29, has made a sensational impression in his debut season with the Brethren and is a massive crowd favourite in the region.The gifted 125kg ball-player is expected to be signed to a three-year deal with Brothers, which will allow him to play out his career in Group Nine.As late as last week Wooden was on the open market for a captain-coaching post, but Brothers have jumped the queue to ensure he stays in Wagga. Field yesterday declared Wooden was a perfect choice to take his place at the Brethren and would carry on the work he started.“He’ll (Wooden) make a great captain-coach,” Field said.“It’s the way to go.”Field said he was pleased to step aside to allow Wooden to take up his first coaching appointment and bring an end to his illustrious playing days in the process.“I definitely won’t be playing after this year,” Field said.“I still want to be involved in coaching, but I don’t know where it might be.“I could be in Sydney next year.“I’ve got a good relationship with (Cronulla coach) Ricky Stuart.”Field has coached Brothers for four years and achieved outstanding results on and off the playing paddock.After finishing 11th of 13 teams in 2004, Brothers climbed to seventh in Field’s first year (2005) before making the grand final last year.Under Field’s leadership, and with Wooden leading the way, the Brethren are fifth on the table this year.Despite effectively handing over the coaching reins to Wooden, Field said he may not be lost to Brothers and would consider a position as football manager in 2009.“I have to look at all my options,” he said.Field, meantime, admitted he was disappointed with Brothers lacklustre performance against Wagga neighbours Kangaroos at Harris Park on Saturday.“We were flat,” he said.“I thought the five blokes backing up after the Group Nine game might be flat, but everyone was.”Brothers lost 22-14 to Roos to drop from second to fifth spot.
