Professor Carey is director of Flinders University's Centre for Remote Health in Alice Springs and was features in the SBS series How Mad Are You.
A central focus of Professor Carey's work is the importance of control to health and wellbeing, and recognition of conflict as an explanation of psychological distress.
He has pioneered new ideas such as patient -led appointment scheduling and patient- perspective care
Professor Carey will speak in Wagga on Monday at a Surviving and Thriving: Mental Health and Wellbeing event being organised by the Friends of Sunflower House.
The free event is aimed at families, friends or workmates who may be wondering how best to support someone when they are having a tough time.
Professor Carey will also be part of a panel discussion, chaired by Charles Sturt University's Rachel Hogg, alongside Paul Templeton from Wagga Base Hospital's mental health recovery unit and Janine Goodrum from Sunflower House.
Joanne Carter from the Friends of Sunflower House said there would be a free sausage sizzle during the evening, as well as a free bus service to help people get to the event.
These buses will be travelling from Temora, Tumut, Gundagai, Lockhart, The Rock, Uranquinty, Ganmain, Coolamon and Marrar to bring people in to hear Professor Carey and the panel.
While the event and the buses are free, it is still essential to register for tickets.
It will be held on Monday, from 7.30pm, at the Kildare Catholic College's hall in Coleman Street, Wagga.
