Mr Whyte’s charity work has been recognised by Bowls NSW, which named him as one of six finalists in the organisation’s Volunteer of the Year competition.
While he did not take out the top prize, Mr Whyte remains surprised and honoured by his nomination.
He is also quick to pay tribute to the RSL Club bowlers who help him raise money, primarily for the paediatric ward at Wagga Base Hospital and for Camp Quality.
Mr Whyte estimates he and his fellow bowlers have raised about $25,000.
“It started because there wasn’t really a lot of fellowship at the time, so we decided to have a raffle and a barbecue and it went from there,” he said.
“We’re really lucky because we have a lot of support from Wagga businesses who are happy to sponsor us.”
The raffles and barbecues remain regular events, along with other competitions, such as in-game contests during bowls.
