Detective Sergeant Brent Fletcher was named police officer of the year at a local awards ceremony on Saturday night.
It was a laid back and festive occasion at the International Hotel, with lots of laughs, music and drinks contrasting pleasantly with the high-pressure environment of everyday police work.
Sergeant Fletcher was among 16 nominated officers, chosen as finalists across six award categories.
He said he was surprised to take out the Specialist Operations Award at first, but even more taken aback to be named this year’s best officer overall.
But no one else was surprised, according to the Riverina Police District commander.
Initially inspired by the work of his father – a former policeman – Sgt Fletcher has been policing for about 30 years and working in the criminal investigations field for almost half of that time.
In a world where residents are changing careers on a whim, he said there was nothing he would rather do.
“I enjoy coming to work,” Sergeant Fletcher said. “I enjoy helping people … it’s been quite rewarding.”
He said like most jobs, being a detective had its moments.
“It can be frustrating at times … you can find it hard to switch off,” Sgt Fletcher said. “But I work with a great group of people … (and) I have a supportive wife and kids that keep me busy.”
He said despite the challenges, it was about doing the best he could on behalf of the victims at the end of the day.
“(Following the Victor Madeley matters) all those victims were crying, they all rang me and thanked me,” Sgt Fletcher said.
“I get satisfaction out of that more than anything really ... Knowing I’ve done my best for those impacted as a result of crime.”
The long-time detective said he was only too happy to be the point of call for anyone in need.
“I like the fact if someone needs help or guidance I have the ability to help out,” he said. “I’ve needed the same thing in the past … so I’m only too happy to give a little bit back.”
The region’s policing commander Superintendent Bob Noble said the award winners were not only worthy, but popular with their peers and the community alike.
He said Sgt Fletcher was one of the most respected, experienced and proficient police officers in the Riverina.
“(He is) a true pro and a fantastic human being,” Superintendent Noble said. “We love him.”
