The idea for the sign was formed when the Committee 4 Wagga realised the opportunities that could be gained by having a sign similar to the one in Hollywood.
In fact, when you think of Hollywood the first thing that often springs to mind is the large sign that sits on Mount Lee in Los Angeles.
They are hoping that similar recognition status could be brought to Wagga through the branding opportunity.
The sign would say ‘Wagga Wagga’ and the estimated dimensions are at least 20 metres in length and several metres in height.
CEO of the Committee 4 Wagga Phil May said the cost of the project is unknown as location, dimensions and materials are still to be determined. Several locations are being considered as factors such as space and visibility are taken into account.
“We are working very closely with council to decide where the sign may be located,” Mr May said.
“We want the sign to be interactive, we want it to be where people go.
“Somewhere close to the riverside developments is high on our priority list in terms of location.”
Mr May said one of the main purposes behind the sign is to encourage interaction.
“The current design includes walking access either side of the letters and incorporates the capabilities for someone to recline in one of the letters and have their photo taken,” he said.
Mr May said it is hard to pin down an icon for Wagga due to the extensive diversity in the city, and by using the city’s name is a simple yet powerful solution that encompasses the city as a whole.
“We want to make a sign that doesn’t exclude the diversity,” he said.
“Using the name, which is such a unique name in itself, we can retain a very simple focus and achieve that diverse region outcome we seek.
“We look forward to the day that it’s completed.”
A statement from council said it has been approached by the Committee 4 Wagga regarding a proposed big ‘Wagga Wagga’ sign, however, a formal proposal is yet to be submitted.
“Council is unable to comment on the specifics of the sign until a formal proposal is received and has been considered by councillors,” the statement read.
