The former leader of a Riverina Church of England Boys Society group was sentenced to a non-parole period of eight years and six months in Wagga District Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to 22 charges.
Waiting almost three decades for justice after suffering at the hands of the man who sexually abused him, one of the victims wiped away tears as he watched on.
On June 20 Madeley, 82, admitted to the 22 offences against the boys in a Riverina town.
One victim, aged in his mid-teens at the time, was subjected to six different incidents including three counts of sexual intercourse without his consent and four counts of indecent assault.
Those crimes occurred between December 1, 1984, and March 3, 1985.
Other charges included one count of buggery, 11 counts of indecent assault and four counts of procuring an act of indecency in the 1970s.
When delivering his sentence, Judge Gordon Lerve told the court the offender may well be spending the remainder of his life behind bars for the crimes, which involved a “substantial abuse of trust”.
“It was his public persona that assisted easy access to his victims, the apologies were hollow,” he said.
The sentence was based on laws at the time of offending between 1974 and 1985. Madeley will be be eligible for release from June 2, 2025.
