The recent monthly sheep sale in Griffith has netted close to $12,000 for Leeton’s Breast Cancer Support Group and overwhelmed member Laney Lashbrook-Gough was still trying to come to terms with the generosity. 

Farmers from across the district donated 49 lambs to be part of the sale, with all proceeds being given back to the Leeton group. 

The concept has been running for some years and continues to build in momentum, with more farmers jumping on board each time. 

“It’s just amazing, I honestly couldn’t believe it,” Mrs Lashbrook-Gough said. 

“I always say $1 today is more than we had yesterday, so to receive this donation is just incredible. 

“It’s truly so generous and we can’t thank everyone enough.”

Lamb prices are continuing to enjoy good prices after a red-hot end to 2017 and a good start to the new year. 

These factors helped contribute to the large amount raised. 

One of those who donated was Tim Hutchinson, who was pleased to see more farmers throwing their support behind the idea. 

“Not only was the donation up (last year $7300 was raised), but also the number of lambs being donated increased as well,” he said. 

“It’s great to have more farmers coming on board with the idea. I think it’s because we all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer – whether it’s a family member, friend or a distant relative.”

The Leeton Breast Cancer Support Group has a long history of raising money for residents in need. 

Its funds are directed back through the Leeton Can Assist organisation, which then ensures Leeton patients with breast cancer can receive the support and help they need. 

“I think that’s why people think of us with these sort of fundraisers … they know the money will stay here and help local people,” Mrs Lashbrook-Gough said.
