Businesses across Ganmain are waging a war on waste after discovering more than 13,000 bags were used per year.
Advance Ganmain Committee member Renee Lucas said the whole community was behind the initiative, which had the potential to spread right across the Riverina.
“The rest of Australia is going plastic bag free, it will be implemented here at some point so why not be proactive and get it done,” she said.
“We never used to use them so really it’s just changing habits.”
The town’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, with the Ganmain committee now in talks with Coolamon about spreading the cause.
“There are so many other friendly options with reusable bags, boxes and paper,” Ms Lucas said.
