Ten elderly people across Australia, including six from NSW, were diagnosed with the infection after consuming rockmelon and becoming ill between January 17 and February 9, the NSW Food Authority said in a statement on Wednesday.
The outbreak has been linked to a rockmelon grower in Nericon, near Lake Wyangan, with the company voluntarily ceasing production after being notified of the contamination.
Mr Catanzariti said things are now under control.
“We ran out of melons of Saturday, and stopped getting them delivered earlier this week while they were being checked.
“But the latest batch delivered yesterday were cleared by the Department of Primary Industry.
“That being said, if anyone has any concerns about melons they’d previously bought here, you can bring them in and get a refund.”
Woolworths also advised that all melons were cleared from their shelves as soon they were informed of the outbreak.
“Following close consultation with the New South Wales Food Authority, we took the precautionary step of withdrawing New South Wales grown rockmelons from sale on Saturday,” the company said in a statement.
“We will continue to work closely with the New South Wales Food Authority until we get the all clear to restock rockmelons".
The Australian Melon Association has urged people to remove or return any rockmelons purchased before Wednesday.
"Any current rockmelon bought before today, discard or take it back to the shop," Australian Melon Association industry development manager Dianne Fullelove told AAP on Wednesday.
"Fruit on the shelf now is from farms that are not implicated."
Listeria infection (also called listeriosis) is a rare but potentially severe illness caused by eating foods that contain the listeria bacteria.
The infection is particularly dangerous to the elderly, pregnant women and people who have underlying health conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart and kidney disease.
People at risk should consult their doctor as soon as possible if symptoms appear.
