Holbrook and District Cricket Association scored their first O’Farrell Cup win in five years when they upset Wagga at Robertson Oval on Sunday.

Experienced cricketer Robbie Mackinlay punched the air as he hit the winning runs to give Holbrook a three-wicket victory.

Holbrook reached 7-219 with 10 balls to spare after restricting Wagga to 9-215 from their 55 overs.

AB Mackinlay laid the platform for the chase with a well-compiled 56, before Nick Perryman guided the visitors home with an unbeaten 48.

Holbrook captain Darren Howard said it was a moment to cherish for the Association.

“We’ve got a pretty young side so I’m really proud. They’ll get a buzz, the boys,” Howard said.

“We’re rapt. We’ve never kept the O’Farrell Cup over the winter break so that’s pretty special. 

“We realise (Wagga) had some quality players out today but whatever side Wagga put on the field is still going to be a quality side so you have got to work hard for your win.

“It’s fantastic, we put our hand up to challenge every year and probably the last two years against West Wyalong and particularly last year against Temora, we probably should have got over the line but didn’t so it’s a bit of reward today.”

Howard believes it was his team’s effort with the ball that won them the match.

“We probably won it in the field, with our bowling,” he said.

“We probably saved 15 or 20 runs. If we were chasing another 15 or 20 it would have been pretty hard.

“We just stuck to a plan, the boys chased everything down and bowled a nice line and length and that got us a target that we were in with a show with.”

Holbrook’s 7-219 was their biggest O’Farrell Cup score in memory.

Holbrook’s win ensured Wagga’s reign with the Cup only lasted a week. The Cup now heads to it’s sixth and final home for the season.
